History of rubber

Although the original forms of rubber were sourced from natural sources, as demand for the material increased, scientists developed synthetic or synthetic rubber in laboratories that mimicked natural materials. These days, most rubber production is synthetic. 

 

Latex is collected from trees by making cuts in the bark and collecting sap. This process is called tapping. Ammonia is added to prevent the juice from solidifying. Then, in a process called coagulation, acid is added to the mixture to extract the rubber This can take about 12 hours. 

 

The mixture is then passed through rollers to remove excess water. When done, the rubber bands are hung on tobacco shelves or left to air dry. A few days later, they are collected in ready-to-process packages.

Natural rubber: Natural rubber is made from certain types of wood by extracting liquid sap, called latex. There are more than 2,500 species of trees that produce this sap (including plants such as dandelion), but the majority use latex to produce rubber from the Hevea brasiliensis tree or rubber tree. These trees are native to South America but are commonly found in Southeast Asia today.

Synthetic rubber

Synthetic rubber : It was at this time that natural rubber resources became scarce during World War I, when German scientists produced synthetic rubber. Although these early forms of rubber were inferior in quality to natural rubber, with the development of research, synthetic rubber improved. Today, synthetic rubber is as strong and reliable as natural rubber.


 Synthetic rubber differs from natural rubber in that it is made by binding polymer molecules together in the laboratory. Natural and synthetic rubber need to undergo a series of processes to make it a usable product. These steps can be slightly adjusted according to the intended use of the final product. In the first step, chemicals are added to the rubber to stabilize it. If the tire cools or sticks, the tire becomes brittle. 


Typically, a carbon black filler is added to the rubber mixture to improve its strength and durability. The rubber is then carefully mixed before it is formed and allowed to cool. It can be formed by pushing it into rollers or squeezing it through holes to create hollow tubes, known as extrusion tubes. In order for the tire to be strong and durable, it eventually goes through a stage of heat treatment known as volcanic.


 This is where rubber is cooked (often with sulfur) to create extra bonds or crosslinks between the rubber molecules, so they do not break down easily. Charles Goodyear accidentally discovered this trend when he threw some rubber on a hot stove and realized how the heat made the rubber harder and more durable. After welding, any defects in the rubber are removed and then formed into the final product or molded. Rubber is widely used today as one of the most important inventions.
